World Health Organization 28WHO29 defines health  as the  "state of complete
physical, mental and social well-being and  not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity." An occupational disease  is any condition arising from workplace
exposures which compromises  worker "physical, mental and social wellbeing".
Many common conditions,  such as dermatitis, hearing loss, asthma, cancer,
musculo-skeletal  disorders, stress related disorders, etc., can be caused by
workplace  conditions. Some health conditions may not be caused by the exposure
but  can be aggravated by workplace exposures 28e.g. heart disease, 
sinusitis29. Exposures at work may also lead to diseases showing up much 
earlier than expected 28e.g. heart attacks, chronic obstructive lung  disease,
hearing loss, etc.29. Some occupational diseases are infectious  diseases that
workers in the service industry such as health care  providers are being exposed
28e.g. SARS, flu, tuberculosis, West Nile  virus29. Finally, there are still
many diseases and conditions which  arise from the building syndromworkplace but
often aren’t recognized as  such 28e.g. solvent related neuropsychiatric
